New Bluegrass Album FICTION Releases For Legendary John Cowan | November 1, 2024

NASHVILLE, TN (November 1, 2024) -  True Lonesome Records is excited to release Fiction from John Cowan today. Fiction comes ten years after the release of Cowan's last bluegrass project Sixty, and has already been met with critical acclaim and heightened radio play. Produced by John alongside his label owners at True Lonesome Records, Eddie Sanders and Scott Vestal,  his soaring, unparalleled vocals and the riveting instrumental prowess displayed by the entire studio band, take the listener on a joyful bluegrass excursion from start to finish.

“John Cowan was the first person I met when I went to work in this business in 1983. He was ‘The Voice’ then. Four decades later John Cowan is still ‘The Voice.’ If anything, time has enhanced that voice that blends rock, soul, and bluegrass, allowing it to carry greater depth and meaning. As he has endured, John has developed into a strong, very honest songwriter bravely going where others do not tread. His new work shows John Cowan at his best vintage.”  -Art Menius, Owner, Art Menius Radio/Former Executive Director of the IBMA and FAI

The highly anticipated and long-awaited release of John Cowan's FICTION follows two chart-topping lead singles from the album: the title track, “Fiction,” and “Gotta Go Now." Cowan co-wrote “Fiction” with Eddie Sanders, and “Gotta Go Now” with Eddie Sanders and Scott Vestal. Both singles did exceedingly well on radio and the various bluegrass charts, with “Fiction” reaching the #2 spot on the Roots Music Report Contemporary Song Chart and “Gotta Go Now,” reaching #2 on the Bluegrass Today Grassicana Chart. There are many more hits to be had throughout this exciting music collection full of original material co-written by John Cowan along with some personal favorites.

Joining John Cowan's soaring vocals and signature bass skills on the ten-track recording are: Cody Kilby (Guitar), Scott Vestal (Banjo), Tim Crouch (Fiddle), Jonah Horton (Mandolin), Jeff Taylor (Accordian), a featured vocal from Bekka Bramlett (Fleetwood Mac), and harmonies from Bekka Bramlett, Dan Tyminski, Bill Lloyd and Ashby Frank.

Cultivating an experimental new sound that melted into the bluegrass genre and coined the phrase ‘Newgrass’ more than four decades ago, John Cowan’s career may be one of the most influential and well-respected of our time. A vocal luminary like John Cowan comes along once in a lifetime and his ability to remain fluent in all styles of music with his singing has led him to perform and record in country, bluegrass, and gospel to soul, jazz, and rock. The list of his collaborations is extensive and he has been named as an influence for some of the most high-profile artists in the world. He is a member of the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.

Historically, Cowan, with bandmates Sam Bush, Courtney Johnson, Curtis Burch, Bela Fleck and Pat Flynn, launched New Grass Revival welcoming millions of new fans to the genre with their captivating brand of bluegrass. Their music changed the face of the genre forever. And John Cowan has a voice that has enchanted audiences for decades.

John Cowan returned to touring with the Doobie Brothers as their bassist and harmony vocalist in 2010, after having played for them briefly in the 90’s. When John’s not on the road with the legendary rock band, he has spent his time playing with his band, The John Cowan Band, as well as resuming his role as a notable Nashville session musician and harmony vocalist for artists such as Garth Brooks, Wynonna, Steve Earle, Rosanne Cash, Delbert McClinton, Rodney Crowell and Travis Tritt. Fans will also see Cowan on stage often collaborating with other bluegrass and Americana acts like Darin & Brooke Aldridge, prior bandmate, Sam Bush, and most recently The HercuLeons, with Andrea Zonn.
